“Replacing some of those guys is tough to do,” Blount said. “But the program has to move on. So we have to work and figure out what the best scenario for us to do is.”
Cory Murphy and Esayah Obado are the two quarterbacks in camp competing for the starting job. They were both on the roster last season but did not enter any games.
Murphy, a transfer from Foothill (Calif.) Junior College, retained junior eligibility and Obado is a redshirt freshman from Hamilton, N.J.
The players they practiced with on the scout team last year are expected to fill the voids left by Elko, Tarpley and Williams.
“It’s a lot of the same guys but now it’s our turn,” Murphy said.
The Hornets also have two incoming recruits, Emmett Hunt of Coatesville, Pa., and Garrison Duncan of Kernersville, N.C., who will challenge for playing time at quarterback. Hunt was the 2012 Southeastern Pennsylvania Offensive Player of the Year in his senior season and Duncan was a part of the 2012 North Carolina 4AA All-State First Team.
Blount said he will wait until the team’s camp in August to name a starter.
“That’s when everything has to come together,” Blount said. “For right now we’re just trying to get these guys a jump on the guys that we signed. Hopefully one of them steps up and becomes our leader.”
“I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of the offense,” Murphy said. “It’s just all the little things we need to work on. Getting our timing down, small things like that.”
There are fewer concerns with the Hornets’ ground attack.
